Increased concern for protecting and safeguarding our environment from serious water pollution resulting from industrial hydrocarbon spills has prompted companies to strive for clean, efficient operations and facilities. Failure to properly control contaminated natural runoff and recover accidental hydrocarbon spills can result in serious pollution problems, exposing the companies involved to punitive actions and their particular industry to public censure.

An effective spill control system, suitable for containing spilled product or contaminated runoff within the facility boundaries, much be provided. Since a hydrocarbon spill could occasionally occur simultaneously during a heavy rain, the spill control system must be capable of effectively separating hydrocarbons from water. The TSI Gravity Displacement Oil-Water Separator will provide the required protection.

Optional Configuration internal view of NuStyle The TSI Gravity Displacement Separator is a cylindrical horizontal steel vessel divided into three compartments, including a separation chamber, a sump and a product sump. Product entering the separator rises to the interface level in the separation chamber and flows through the separation chamber to the point most remote from the entry and reverses its previous direction of flow by entering the water transfer pipe. The water must exit the transfer pipe into the water sump by overflowing a vertical hydraulic trap. If an elevation lower than the water level in the water sump is accessible, such as a river, lake or storm sewer, the water will pass by gravity from he separator. If gravity flow is not possible, the water can be pumped from the sump.

The TSI Oil-Water separator will meet or exceed API criteria for effective oil-water separation. Basically, the unit is a gravity separator with a baffle and separation chamber arrangement which permits full utilization of Stokes Law for separating immiscible liquids.


NuStyle - This configuration orients the separation chamber at one end of the vessel and allows a straight-through flow of water. Flow losses thought the shorter transfer pipe are reduced. Additionally, inlet and outlet piping runs are generally more convenient since entry and exit are on opposite ends of the vessel.

Double Wall Construction - A full 360 degree wrap outer shell constructed of 1/4" thick carbon steel is added to meet secondary containment regulations. Interstitial monitors are available to detect water or hydrocarbon intrusion into the annular space.

Resident Condition - The Displacement type separator is illustrated after sufficient oil has accumulated to produce an equilibrium resulting from the weight differential of the oil-water mixture in the separation chamber, and the water in the water holding sump. Subsequent additions of either oil or water will displace like amounts into either the oil or water sump. The "last-in, last out" operation allows full utilization of the time interval between spills for gravity separation.

The displacement design concept assures effective performance even when the TSI separator is subjected to temporary surges in excess of design capacity. By utilization of the time interval between spills, maximum gravity separation of the resident hydrocarbon and water is realized. Should a spill emergency result in an unusually large hydrocarbon surge combined with a heavy down pour of rainwater, the mixture entering the separator will displace an equivalent volume of the previously separated resident liquids This feature also provides a protective reservoir of clean water which will be displaced by the temporary surge of hydrocarbon, during a major emergency.

When, during normal operations, the product is not removed from the holding sump and additional product enters the separator, the product will eventually displace the water ballast in the separation chamber. This very important feature allows the separator to function as a large holding tank in order to accommodate relatively large spills even when the means for removal of product from the product holding sump is unavailable or inoperative. Equilibrium may easily be reestablished by introducing water into the separation chamber to displace excess product into the product holding sump from which it can be transferred to storage.


Coalescing Options - for enhanced gravity separation requirements, the TSI Gravity Displacement Separators can be supplied with coalescing media. The configuration of either system provides a sludge retaining baffle which keep accumulations of sediment from reaching the separation compartment.


Plate Pak internal view The internal design of the TSI oil-water separator assures its operational efficiency for both intermittent and continuous flow applications. Laboratory controlled tests and operational results from hundreds of installations confirm that the TSI design separator can provide a maximum of 3-5 ppm effluent under normal operating conditions and less than 10 ppm effluent when subjected to the maximum flows which the units were designed to handle.

Enquip can provide a complete pre-engineered accessory equipment package to provide a totally automated mechanical operation if gravity flow of water or product from the separator is not practical or possible. Accessory equipment may include one or two product pumps, water pump, liquid level controls, electrical control panels and other miscellaneous items as required for each installation.

The Plate Pak - is a parallel series of carbon, stainless or fiberglass plates inclined to 45 degrees which provide increased surface area and direct oil particles toward the oil-water interface. The Mesh Pak - is a removable bundle of high stainless steel carrier. The oleophilic properties of the mesh allow oil particles to agglomerate to a size sufficient to hasten their rise to the interface.

At the same time, the units reclaim expensive hydrocarbons.

Operating Condition - The Displacement type separator is shown in operation with the incoming oil-water mixture displacing equal amounts of previously separated oil and water into the holding sumps. Note the capacity available in the separating chamber ad holding sumps to retain an oil surge caused by a major spill.

This patented design check valve eliminates the chance of contamination of the effluent stream by shutting off flow in the event of an emergency hydrocarbon spill.

Freeze Protection (right)

Electric immersion heaters or steam coils can be installed to insure flowing temperatures in the vessel when located above ground or above frost line.
